Woolloomooloo - With its tongue twisting name, Woolloomooloo would certainly pique the curiosity of any first time visitor to Sydney. Located less than 2km from the CBD, Woolloomooloo is a harbourside suburb that was once a former docklands area and considered as the poorer district of Sydney until recently when a new housing development began on Finger Wharf. There are a number of stories concerning the origin of the name 'Woolloomooloo'. One suggests that it can be derived from the Aboroginal word 'Wallamullah' or 'Wallabahmullah' that means young black kangaroo.
Nowadays, Woolloomooloo is probably more known for being the home to the Finger Wharf, the largest wooden structure in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records. From its origin as the entry point for sailors and mariners, the wharf has been renovated to now accommodate a hotel, upscale apartment complex and many restaurants and cafés. Diners here would enjoy a stunning view of the city skyline, the harbour and surrounding view.
If anybody was to ask the locals what would be the landmarks of the city, most would probably answer 'Harry's Café de Wheels' and The Domain. The former is actually a pie shop that specializes in serving what is called 'a pie floater' which is a meat pie floating in a bowl of squashed peas. It certainly doesn't sound all that healthy or delicious but it is almost regarded as a national treasure with even well-known celebrities such as Pamela Anderson and Bill Cosby making their way to the café to sample this dish. The Domain is actually a popular place for public rallies where anybody is free to make speeches on almost any topics without any fear. Just like the Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park, London, it is also a favourite venue for festivals, concerts and other public events.
