Coogee - Coogee is a popular beachside area in Sydney, second only to Bondi Beach, and is great for families with small children as the waves here are quite tame and perfect for swimming. Also known as Sydney's 'Seaside Village', Coogee is just minutes away from the city's CBD, making it an ideal destination for a day at the beach on weekends. It offers great dining experience with many cafes and restaurants offering a variety of cuisines along Coogee Bay Road, and healthy nightlife with bars and pubs in the surrounding hotels.
Coogee Beach is great for swimming especially with presence of the council lifeguards throughout the year. It is also protected by the Wedding Cake Island, a rocky reef about 400m offshore that helps break the waves. Another great way to spend your time in Coogee is by walks on the coast and taking in the breathtaking scenery. Go on cliff top walk between Coogee and Bondi that takes you through most of the beaches or snorkel at Gordon's Bay just off Coogee Beach. Visitors should also try to catch a game of rugby at the Coogee Oval. Coogee is after all the home ground of Randwick Rugby Union Club, a popular rugby team in Sydney.
On a more somber note, Coogee is also the location of the memorial for the victims of the Bali bombings. Built to commemorate the memory of 20 victims that came from the eastern suburbs of Sydney, the site is called the Dolphins Point, in honour of the members of the Dolphins club who perished in the bombings.
