Auckland is located in the northern region of the North Island of New Zealand. The City lies across an 11km wide volcanic isthmus separating two harbours. The Waitemata Harbour to the east opens into the Hauraki Gulf, and to the Pacific Ocean. The Manukau Harbour to the west offers many estuaries and surf beaches and opens to the Tasman Sea. The nearest city to the south of Auckland is Hamilton, and to the north is Whangarei. Rydges Auckland Hotel is only a 35 minute drive from the airport. Transportation services once in the city, get on a 'Yellow Bus' or take in the major tourist attractions on the United Explorer Bus. To go south or west of the city, try the local commuter trains, or for travel throughout the region try one of the many regional bus services. On the water, Fullers Ferry Company operate a number of commuter ferries including daily tours around the harbour and to the outer islands. If you're driving, call in at one of the Auckland Visitor Centres to pick up a detailed road map and information on a variety of destinations. For travel to or from other parts of New Zealand, there are many options including planes, trains and rental vehicles.
