We picked this hotel as we were travelling on the Trans Scenic Railway the following day & it was the nearest I could find to the Railway Station. We found it very convenient for that & also for the shops, as there is a large complex within 10mins walking distance.
The staff were very helpfull in arranging our free transfers to the station at 6.30 in the morning and our journey went according to plan.
We did try to order food in the evening but 2 of the items on the menu were not available so we went out to a local restaurant. There are many to choose from in the area, so this was not too inconvenient.

Clean, basic accommodation. Breakfast poor. Staff very helpful. Nice walk into Christchurch, easy access to state highway.

The staff were lovely and the room was beautifully clean.
My issues were we had to lug our heavy suitcases up 2 flights of stairs.
We are a big family of four and our children ( 15/17) were in a bunk bed. The bed squeaked so badly every time someone moved it made it impossible to sleep. There was hardly room with the four of us to swing a cat.
There is no air conditioning.
We used the hotel as overnight accomodation only.

People seemed to be coming in at all hours of the night and were far from quiet.
Very close to botanical gardens which was a bonus.

For couples or groups of people seeking overnight accomodation it would be fine and it was certainly cheaper than many other hotels

Convenient for the Railway Station

Our overnight stay was extremely pleasant & the receptionist arranged a free shuttle to the railway station for us early the following morning.
Although the location could be described as a good 25 minute walk to the centre it is ideally situated if you need to get a train.

The Staff at Riccarton Hotel were professional and friendly, however there were a few minor niggles that would have improved the hotel's standing.

The "Free" Wi Fi access did not seem to work on several occassions. Whether this was interference or simply being switched off I don't know.

We felt that for the size of the facility, the lack of a "night porter/night manager" was surprising.

We felt the dining facilities were limited in the available choices and so we chose to go into Christchurch to eat - an easy walk through the park.

For us, perhaps the most glaring issue was the provision of what we call "plastic milk" in thos horrible little tubs. We would have liked to have been able to purchase or better have provided fresh milk. This could be managed as there was a fridge in the room and the hotel knew of our impending arrival.
