Georgetown - Georgetown is Penang main financial and commerce hub that is both modern and traditional at the same time. There's hardly any gleaming, towering skyscrapers except for the iconic Komtar that sits in the middle of the city. You can still find quaint pre-war shophouses in most parts of Georgetown. They are jealously guarded and preserved and pay homage to the island's colourful and historical background as a major trading outpost since centuries ago. In 2008, Georgetown was accorded the honour of being listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
And did you know that city was actually named after King George III? Georgetown is one of the favourite cities to visit for most visitors. It's not difficult to see with its rich tapestry of history, culture and tradition that reflect the diversity of the states. Find out more about its past by visiting Penang State Museum and Art Gallery with its precious collection of photographs, documents, antiques and artifacts. You can also marvel at the intricate architecture of Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion that was built on the Feng Shui principles. This traditional Chinese mansion showcases the amazing creativity of the 18th century master craftsmen.
As you walk down Pitt Street, it would hard to miss the Kapitan Keling Mosque, the first mosque to be built on the island. The white walls and the minarets gleam against the sun. Visitors are welcome but you must seek the permission from mosque officials first. A favourite pastime for the locals eating and with hundreds of stalls, restaurants and cafes in Georgetown, you'll soon find yourself seating in front of a plate of delicious nasi kandar or cendol which is shaved ice with syrup and all sorts of nuts, beans and corns. Delicious! After a hearty dinner, why not look for a place to just chill and listen to some good music. Georgetown is certainly a happening nightspot with many pubs and nightclubs that open until early morning.
