Flagstaff Gardens - Visitors to Melbourne should not miss the opportunity to visit the city's oldest park, the Flagstaff Gardens. Easily reached via train with the Flagstaff railway station located on its southeast corner, the park's 18 acres are a favourite spot for tourists and office workers who seek respite from the busy city life. Flagstaff Gardens actually takes it name from the flagstaff erected on the highest point as a form of communication between the town and harbour circa 1840.
The park itself is a rather exciting place to explore with a memorial filled with graves of the early English settlers, spacious lawns, flowering shrubs and a number of monuments and sculptures scattered throughout. Flagstaff Gardens and its surrounding have been witness to historical occasions such as the lighting of a bonfire on the day Victoria was proclaimed as a separate colony by Queen Victoria in 1850.
