Malacca Town - Located just below 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur on the PLUS Highway heading south is the historical state of Malacca. And right in the heart is the Malacca Town, one of Malaysia's oldest and most popular holiday destinations for both local and foreign visitors. The first few things you'd notice about Malacca Town are the absence of towering skyscrapers and the beautifully preserved pre-war shophouses. It has a rich history that dates back to the 15th century when it was an important port at the height of the Malacca Sultanate. Malacca's uniqueness was the result of its colonization by different foreign powers that include the Dutch, Portuguese and the British. Each has influenced the local customs, traditions and even food items that are truly a reflection of its diverse history.
The very first place you'd go would probably be Jonker Street that is famous for its antique shops and where you can find authentic Peranakan buildings. It is also close to many other attractions such as the A'Famosa fortress, the Dutch Square with its vivid red buildings, and the Portuguese settlement where you can taste the authentic local delicacies. Due to its rich history, Malacca has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. There are modern shopping malls but for a more authentic feel, you should probably make a beeline to Jonker Street. You can bargain and even walk away with a good price on an authentic piece of antiquity. And of course, you really shouldn't miss trying the popular chicken rice balls or cendol which is a dessert made from shaved ice and drizzle with palm sugar and coconut. They're just delicious!
