The 'Indi Bar' in Scarborough has been featuring
LIVE music since 1987 when Gordon Wilson and Simon Townsend played covers to
university students and Scarborough locals. John Green and Dean Hewitt
introduced us to Rick Steele who was the first artist to put a full band into
the Indi Bar. Since then the Indi has become an institution within the Perth
live music scene, hosting live music five nights a week, mostly original. Bands
such as The Waifs, John Butler and Dave Hole once had regular gigs at the Indi
before they became too big for a venue licensed to hold just 175. But that is
the Indi charm - a intimate environment which puts the artists right amongst the
crowd, to everyone's' delight - both punter and artist.
The Indi Bar these days predominantly features
blues and roots music, often with a rock or reggae twist. Local blues/rock
legend Mick Vdelli has a residency on Friday nights and Saturday night is a
dedicated blues night with True Blue Promotions bringing the best local and
touring blues to the Indi Bar stage each week. Anything can happen on a Sunday,
with bands of late including Jez and James Cruikshank (from the Cruel Sea), Dave
Graney, The Shinkickers, Brett Hunt and Nathan Kaye. Thursday nights at the Indi
is Open Mic - Acoustic, showcasing the original music of Peth's up and coming
talent. Many artists have scored gigs after performing on the Indi Stage which
keeps the talent coming in week after week.
