Well known for having historical and cultural values, Tuban has many attractions to offer and one of those that you should not miss while being here are the natural caves which now has been made visitor-friendly. You can reach these caves within minutes, and get a tour guide to aid you so that you don't waste time wandering to the wrong sections. This is because caves have many loops and sections and much time will be wasted if you don't know where the attraction is.
Tuban – Tuban has considerable historical and cultural value as the town is believed to exist since the 11th century. With plenty of natural beauties and stunning cave formations, Tuban receive waves of visitors yearly especially tourists coming with families. Tuban also has a thick teakwood forest and while logging is a strictly monitored activity, the forest remains a safe place for a stroll but make sure you hire a forest guide or bring along someone who are familiar with the tracks in the forest to avoid getting lost.
An interesting attraction in Tuban is the grave of Sunan Bonang, a 16th century Islamic missionary and one of the Wali Sango or Nine Saints who was involved in the initial spread of Islam in Java. Sunan Bonang's grave has become an important pilgrimage site for local Muslims attracting thousands of locals every year. Tourists are allowed to visit but you will have to follow strict rules of conduct, essential for a holy site.
Home for hardwood teak production in Bali, Tuban is well recognised for production of tobacco, where high grades are packed for international market and low grades are rolled for local market. You can buy good grades of local cigars but expect to pay a huge sum. Batiks are famous here, and Tuban has its own batik type, Batik Gedog, which usually take sea life motifs.
Tuban is also known as 'City of Thousand Caves' as there are countless amounts of natural caves rich with stalagmite and stalactites within the area. Two must-visits are the Goa Akbar and Goa Maharani. These two caves are the most famous as it has stalagmite and stalactites in form of statues of people and animals, believed to be naturally formed, giving the place a mystic ambience. There are guidelines to before entering the caves as well, for locals believe these caves have spiritual 'guardian' which needs to be pacified before entering.
