Parnell - Dubbed as the oldest suburb in entire New Zealand, Parnell is well known for its galleries, cafés, restaurants and charming boutique-style stores. The surrounding is well preserved in village like environment with surreal cottage designs and plenty of hidden attractions such as parks hidden behind the stores where visitors will have to take unique walkways and more. Parnell is where daily living takes its own pace, unhurried, unlike the busy fast paced urban living hood.
There are quite a number of historic buildings such as the Ewelme Cottage, Kinder House and the Holy Trinity Cathedral & St Mary's. The kauri-constructed Ewelme Cottage was built in 1817, and till today the cottage remains the same. The cottage is of considerable importance due to its well-preserved interiors, furnishings, and for its valuable insight on colonial building materials and techniques. Visitors may also want to visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral which houses the Cathedral Organ, a tapered pipe organ built in 1968 having an awesome 4,309 pipes with full length Contra Salicional at 32 feet high.
Other notable attraction is the Auckland War Memorial Museum which houses two Halls of Memory within which the names of all those killed in major conflicts in the past century are recorded and remembered. The Cenotaph and consecrated ground in front of the Museum are a touchstone of remembrance every Anzac Day, celebrated for the memory of the 12,000 people who died in First and Second World War. The War Memorials and galleries are located on the top floor of the museum.
